Who is Looking Glass Workshop

Hi! I'm Kirsten, and I have loved board games for as long as I can remember. While I was always the one to read the rules and teach others how to play games, it wasn't until I was homeschooling my son that the dream of designing a game of my own ever occurred to me.

We were gearing up for a visit to the Colorado Symphony in Denver, and as an avid gameschooler, I always tried to incorporate board gaming into our lessons. I searched for a good classical music game to reinforce our learning. I couldn't find one. That's when Ovation was born!

It's been a long process of learning for both of us in a wonderful way we never anticipated, but the dream of publishing is closer than ever to becoming a reality. My goal is to share more of the journey, support this wonderful hobby particularly for families, and continue designing games that are fun and maybe even a little educational.

Why Looking Glass Workshop? This ties into a different dream from a long time ago, but the ideas behind it still mean a lot to me.

A group of friends and I were going to start a theatre company, and we wanted a name to express both the feeling of play and wonder that the theatre provides but also reflect (pun intended) Shakespeare's instruction to the players about being truthful and holding "the mirror up to nature." I hit on Looking Glass Players as a name to highlight both qualities (Alice's wonderful adventures plus Shakespeare's mirror), and we loved it.

The theatre company never came to be, as one of our members had an opportunity of a lifetime that took him to Harvard, but the philosophy of art and humanity we all shared has continued to be an important part of who I am.

When searching for a name for my work in board gaming, I kept coming back to childlike fun and wonder combined with a true reflection of who we are. So Looking Glass was perfect!

And the Workshop part? Well, I didn't want to limit my exploratory path to just one thing. In a workshop, you can create anything you can imagine, and I hope you'll join me in imagining, creating, and playing together with Looking Glass Workshop!
